Bookmarks

You can access favourite maps, multi-user chat rooms, and even launch external applications by adding them to the Bookmarks menu. Once added, any bookmarked item appears directly in that (ever-growing) Bookmarks menu, and can be selected from there. Items may be added in two different ways:

1. Add bookmark button: Certain windows have an 'Add bookmark' icon that looks like this:

This icon appears at the top of Maps, Groupchat windows, and 'Jabber browser' windows (the latter is mainly for advanced users). When you are using a map or groupchat that you want to save for easy access later, just click on the 'Add bookmark' icon and the item will instantly be added to the Bookmarks menu for easy access in the future.

2. Manual 'add bookmark' menu: selecting the menu item Bookmarks... Add bookmark... brings up a dialogue box where you are asked to specify three things: (i) Boomark name (this is totally up to you), (ii) JID/url/path (this depends on the 'type' as we'll see in a moment), and (iii) Bookmark type, which is one of six types as described below:

  • Application is the type to select when you want to launch any favourite application directly from the Bookmarks menu in BuddySpace. You can name the bookmark whatever you like, as shown below, and most importantly in this case you must yourself identify the precise directory navigation path that leads straight to the application, and enter it in the second text field (e.g. c:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe in the example below).

  • Buddyspace map is the type you would choose if you wanted manually to enter the path to a known map within the BuddySpace maps folder, e.g. samples/Office.ygf (but maps are really a lot easier to specify by opening them normally and then selecting the 'add bookmark' button!).
  • Groupchat is the type you would choose if you wanted manually to enter the a known 'conference room' by giving its full 'Jabber ID', which looks something like this: jdev@conference.jabber.org (but groupchats are really a lot easier to specify by opening them normally and then selecting the 'add bookmark' button!).
  • Jabber browse is the type you would choose if you wanted manually to enter the kind of item you find on the Jabber... Browse services... menu, by giving its full 'Jabber ID', which looks something like this: conference.jabber.org (but groupchats are really a lot easier to specify by opening them normally and then selecting the 'add bookmark' button!).
  • Registration is like 'Jabber browse' immediately above, but is useful for bookmarking 'one level deeper', i.e. going directly to a registration form for an external 'transport' such as MSN Messenger; you can do this by giving its full 'Jabber ID', which looks something like this: jabber-msn.open.ac.uk (you could also have selected 'Jabber browse' to be the type for this, but selecting Regisration changes the functionality and takes you to the right form).
  • Web page is the type to select when you want to manually bookmark any particular web page, by entering its full URL such as: http://kmi.open.ac.uk

If you change your mind or want to get rid of any bookmark, it can be selected specifically by choosing the menu item Bookmarks... Delete bookmark... and then you can choose it from the pop-up list.
