Connecting to your ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo! friends
- Design philosophy: The Jabber server that we run
at jabber.open.ac.uk offers most of the available third-party
gateways, so that once you become a user on our server,
you may connect to the following services directly, and run a single
'universal' client to talk to any or all of these too: MSN, ICQ, and
Yahoo! At the moment, AOL intermittently blocks Jabber interactions.
- To set up this gateway capability you need to register
with the appropriate ICQ/MSN/Yahoo or other service, which you can do
directly using one of the following three techniques: (a) Go
to the Jabber... Browse Services... menu, and look
for the shortcuts to MSN... register or ICQ...
register or Yahoo... register (b) you can
establish these connections first outside of BuddySpace to ensure that
they work correctly, e.g. using Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messegner or
ICQ; (c) you can set them up using the following menu sequence: Jabber...
Browse Services... ICQ/MSN/Yahoo Transport... jabber:iq:register...
then follow the dialogue boxes from there.
- MSN: In order to connect to your MSN account you will
need an existing MSN username. In general, it will look like this: email@example.com
or firstname.lastname@example.org. To add a contact such as email@example.com
you would select 'Add contact' from the main BuddySpace screen
or Roster menu, and enter the following as their Jabber ID:
- ICQ: For ICQ, you need an ICQ number, which you can
obtain from www.icq.com or another Jabber client that will let you create
a new ICQ account. Having done that, you can add an ICQ contact as follows:
supposing their ICQ number is (say) 1234567, then select 'Add contact'
from the main BuddySpace screen or Roster menu, and enter the following
as their Jabber ID:
- Yahoo: The Yahoo! gateway works in the same manner as the above
two. You will need a valid Yahoo! username, such as jbloggs.
Then, to add your Yahoo friend fsmith you would Add contact' as above,
and enter the following as their Jabber ID:
