Frequently Asked Questions about...

choosing courses at pre-undergraduate / undergraduate level

20. Is a non subject specific degree worth less than one in a named subject area? (named degree)

You can only gain a degree in a named subject area at honours level and so a degree which is not confined to a specific subject area at honours level is the same in as much as they are both at the same level. They both take the same effort and you have to reach the same level of skill and understanding as would be required for any honours degree at any UK university. (N.B. it is also possible to gain an ordinary bachelors degree if you take the none specific subject area route)

Some people prefer a named degree because it quickly describes the subjects you studied and will give you some structure to the courses you choose. However, others prefer to choose a non subject degree because it offers them more freedom of choice and can be tailored to their needs.

You choice of degree may affect the class of your degree and the time you can take to complete the qualification. We recommend you should check these details carefully and take advice from your nearest Regional Centre before making a final decision.

If you are taking a degree because you want to improve your job prospects, you should check what possible employers might look for or want.
