Frequently Asked Questions about...

choosing courses at pre-undergraduate / undergraduate level

24. What is a diploma?

Diplomas are awarded for successful completion of a set of courses at level 2 or 3. There are diplomas for a full range of subjects from Social Science to Technology. For each diploma, you will find a list of the courses you must take.

The OU diplomas were designed for people with some experience of studying at University level who wanted to update their skills or increase the breadth of their study. Courses that lead to a diploma are at the higher levels of OU courses and assume you have developed university study skills and have some knowledge of the subject area. OU students sometimes choose to work only towards a diploma or to gain a diploma and then go on to work towards a degree. However, you need to choose carefully because you can only count each course towards two qualifications.

Therefore, if you have not studied at undergraduate level before, your starting point should be one of your level 1 courses and then you could consider completing courses towards a diploma or degree.
