Frequently Asked Questions about...

choosing courses at pre-undergraduate / undergraduate level

25. Why do I need to complete a diploma, if I want a degree?

You don't need to, unless you want a staging post for your qualification. Actually, you can only count one course towards two qualifications, so you have to make your choice carefully. Your nearest Regional Centre can offer guidance.

The OU diplomas were designed for people with some experience of studying at University level who wanted to update their skills or increase the breadth of their study. Courses that lead to diploma assume you have developed university study skills and have some knowledge of the subject area. OU students sometime choose to work only towards a diploma or to gain a diploma and then go on to work towards a degree. However, you need to choose carefully because one course can only count towards two qualifications.

Therefore, if you have not studied at undergraduate level before, your starting point should be one of your level 1 courses and then you could consider completing courses towards a diploma or degree.
