Prolearn Mobile Concept 4 - Empowering Ubiquitous Communication

Case study 4a : Phone the Web

The project has been reviewing technologies and scenarios for telephone enabled web services. Examples of this include:

A Community Network Voice Portal
  • A personal, voice accessible desktop with links to online voice services such as email, discussion bulletin boards, and information and community services.
• A-synchronous virtual discussion rooms mimicking conventional online discussion areas but with the added depth and richness of voice communication.

Voice and mobile services for KMI produced applications
  • Telephone voice portal for the 'KMI Planet' on-line newspaper.
• Voice and SMS text message submission of articles + voice notes for the 'KMI Planet' on-line newspaper.
• Telephone voice portal for the Open Universities 'Virtual Degree Ceremony'.

Voice Notes
A simple interface for collecting and organising voice notes online, recorded via a telephone. Individual voice notes could be organized then attached to e-mails and web pages. A 'Voice Box' (similar to the 'Video Boxes' left by TV companies in shopping centres) could be added to a web site to collect vocal feedback and messages. Other applications include a remotely (web) accessible voice-mail-box or turning a mobile phone into a web accessible dictation machine.

Case study 4b : Rostra Live

Based on Rostra News Services, Rostra Live supports a range of new engines to allow novel forms of access to their own changing information world. Using specially written Macromedia Flash interfaces to read XML feeds from the ROSTRA servers, these news and event feeds can be dynamically mixed with other sources to support a range of animated views of significant changing data.
One initial application of this concept is the 'Promo Engine'. This is designed as a dynamic kiosk display system - mixing news and other data (eg. information from currently 'hot' projects) into an animated kiosk, screen-saver or live to a PDA or mobile device.
